Horror Film : Subgenres

In the end, majority rules. We have decided to go along with creating a film opening in the horror genre, so I thought it might be helpful to explore the multitude of subgenres in order to better narrow down on an idea for the film.

              - Action Horror - combines paranormal forces and the supernatural with intense battles and weaponry of the action genre (ex. Aliens 1986)

              - Comedy Horror - Usually aimed at a family audience; combines elements of horror with comedic punch lines and sarcasm of comedy movies. (ex. Beetlejuice 1988)

              - Holiday Horror - Used to be very popular as many horror films were centered around Halloween. Can involve a psychopath going on a killing spree on a holiday as he sees that everyone is happy while he is miserable. (ex. Halloween 1978)

             - Psychological Horror - Usually relies on a combination of mental illness, such as schizophrenia, and the supernatural; maybe an individual's mental illness may allow her to communicate with paranormal beings and creatures, wreaking havoc on ordinary people or family members. (ex. Split 2016)

             - Sci-fi Horrors - Not as intense as the other horror genres; usually involves crazy scientists and aliens, or pathological agents turning pedestrians into zombies. (ex. Apollo 18 2011)

             - Found Footage Horror - If performed correctly, this subcategory of horror can be very frightful. Here, the entire movie is filmed from a first-person perspective, utilizing various dutch angles and editing techniques to make the filming seem unplanned. This usually makes way for an "authentic" feel to the film, making it more believable and tangible in a way since the events have been filmed by a person. Obviously, this is merely a filming technique and does not make the fantasies depicted any more real. (ex. The Blair Witch Project 1999)

             - Splatter Films - These horror films focus on blood, brains, and guts. The emphasis is on creating a very graphic film that will leave viewers stunned and amazed by how many different ways the human body can be mutilated (ex. The Human Centipede 2009)

             - Slasher Film - The "classic" horror movie. The plot in these films revolves around a psychopathic serial killer who successively kills people, usually through the use of bladed tools, hence the term "slasher". (ex. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974)

            - Horror Thriller - Combines gruesome elements of the horror genre with the tension buildup of the thriller genre (I might do more research on this genre since many elements and conventions overlap with each other). This subgenre has become quite popular recently and may make the most sense to film. (ex. A Quiet Place 2018)
